Exorcist: The Beginning is a 2004 prequel to The Exorcist. Directed by Renny Harlin. The movie was retooled from Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist for fears that Dominion would not be as successful and the studio wanted a more classic horror movie. Both movies use the same sets and locations, and have basically the same plot.
Reception
Exorcist: The Beginning has received an 11% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. By comparison, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist received 30%. The film was nominated for two Razzie Awards for Worst Director and Worst Remake or Sequel. Both awards went to other movies.
The movie was not praised universally. William Peter Blatty was quoted in one review - saying:
"After a slam-bang opening sequence, Harlin's prequel deteriorated into what was surely the most humiliating professional experience of my life, particularly the finale. I don't blame Renny Harlin, for he gave Morgan Creek, I promise you, precisely what Morgan Creek demanded: not shocking obscenity, but shocking vulgarity."[1]
Roger Ebert commented:
"I've seen both versions and much prefer Schrader's, and yet it must be said that Harlin did not prostitute himself in his version.[...] I prefer the Schrader version, certainly, but you know what? Now that two versions exist and are available, each one makes the other more interesting."[2]
Box Office Performance
The Exorcist Preques movies cost $80 Million together to make, $50 Million for Exorcist; The Beginning and $30 Million for Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. On its Opening Weekend the film brought in $18, 054,001 playing on 2803 screens[3]. Total box office receipts worldwide was $78,000,586[4].
